4 Things to Consider When Choosing a Hypnotist

There are things to consider when working with a hypnotist/hypnotherapist. Hypnosis has become so very popular and rightfully so. The rapid change is real.  Lives have been improved using hypnosis and its change work of the mind. Most know someone personally who has successfully made changes using hypnosis.  Celebrities as well as noted scientists have successfully used hypnosis like Albert Einstein, Sir Isaac Newton, Thomas Edison, Henry Ford, Nikola Tesla, Carl Jung, Sigmund Freud, Ellen DeGeneres, Matt Damon, David Beckham, Adele, Jessica Alba, Tiger Woods, Julia Roberts, Kevin Costner, Bruce Willis and many others.

Not all hypnotists and their certifications are created equal. Some considerations for seeking a hypnotist follow.

IS YOUR HYPNOTIST PROFESSIONALLY TRAINED AND CERTIFIED?

I have been professional trained and certified by two largest, well-respected hypnosis organizations.  Not only am I certified as a hypnotherapist, but am also a trainer for the two organizations.  Board Certified Hypnotist and Certified Hypnosis Trainer (National Guild Hypnotists); Certified Professional Hypnotist and Certified Trainer (International Certification Board of Clinical Hypnotherapists)

I also hold advanced specialized certifications in pediatric hypnosis, emergency responder hypnosis, IBS Hypnosis, smoking cessation, pain relief, dental bruxism hypnosis, numerous spiritual certifications and recommendations.

Accredited PhD titles or doctor as titles specifically relating to hypnosis do not exist.  However, I have trained doctors, nurses as well as therapists and psychologists in the use of hypnosis in their current practices.

WHAT REALLY DO YOU KNOW ABOUT YOUR HYPNOTIST?

While I find social media a tool. Using “likes”, comments or number of posts should not be a factor when deciding who you will work with.  A photo of a large impressive building should be part of due diligence as well. Is it a photo of their office building or entirety of their business?

Websites can also be a place of twisted truths to drive traffic and SEO.

While currently I am training and running corporate programs, I keep time in my calendar for private 1-1 clients. If my private slots are full, you will be informed prior and given opportunity for the wait list.  I will not refer out (without your knowledge) nor will you show up to another hypnotist for your session.

My services are not the most inexpensive.  What you are purchasing is not only time, but years of education, training, experience and wisdom. While we are understanding of personal financial problems and do have opportunities for sliding scale, they often come with a considerable wait time.

IS YOUR HYPNOTIST ACTUALLY IN BUSINESS FULL TIME/PART TIME AND WHERE?

I am not a hobbyist hypnotist.  I am a full-time professional hypnotist as well as a wellness life coach.  I take what I do seriously. I have an established office as well as travel to corporate headquarters and offer digital on-line clients/trainings.

One should always seek a professional instead of a hobbyist.  When seeking training, one should always be trained from an active clinical hypnotist that still takes clients 1-1.

DOES YOUR HYPNOTIST OFFER A REAL-TIME CONSULTATION or DISCOVERY SESSION?

Automation is wonderful and can create a smooth transition to seeking answers.  But there are times when real-time speaking to each other should be considered.  All those that seek assistance with me can receive a free 15-minute discovery session.  I will ask you a few questions to find if we are a good fit for each other.  Not all who seek my services are accepted to my trainings or as a client. I respect scope of practice.

Currently most of my clients come from medical and doctors’ referrals and do not want/need the consultation, but is there if you want it.

What is Hypnotherapy and Clinical Hypnosis?

Hypnotherapy (also called clinical hypnosis) is the process of using hypnosis to interact with the subconscious mind in an open-reflective process to create positive change. There are many techniques, styles as well as applications of hypnotherapy.

What is Hypnosis?

Hypnosis is simply a state of heightened suggestibility.  Our office uses relaxed focus and concentration for change. It is a natural state. In fact, each of us enters such a state – sometimes called a trance state many times a day. The common ones are when we are falling asleep and when we are waking up. The foggy, time distorted state between dreaming and awake is also a trance state. Our sense of time is well distorted when in an alpha state.  The 10-minute snooze-button feels like an hour-long dream is a sign of an alpha/theta trance state.

There are numerous times during our day that we enter a trance state:  driving, watching TV, listening to music, working on a favorite hobby or any activity that you are in your ‘zone’. Trance is a normal, natural occurrence.

Clients sometime report, “I wasn’t hypnotized. I knew what was going on the entire time!” Hypnosis is not a state of amnesia, it’s actually just the opposite, in fact: hypnosis is a state of very heightened awareness and focus.

Is Hypnosis Medically Approved?

Hypnosis was first officially recognized as a viable therapeutic tool by the British Government through the Hypnotism Act in 1952. Then, in 1958 both the British and the American Medical Associations (AMA) sanctioned the official use of hypnosis by physicians. In 1958, the American Psychiatric Association (APA) also approved hypnotherapy for use by professionally responsible individuals.

Prestigious hospitals in the U.S. now use and teach hypnosis, such as Stanford University School of Medicine in San Francisco, the Dana Farber, Beth Israel Medical Center in Boston, and University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas. Since the AMA sanctioned the use of hypnosis, many insurance companies cover hypnosis for medical and dental uses, including major surgeries.  Hypnosis is even being used over anesthesia for surgery. Some choose hypnosis simply because they fear not waking up from anesthesia. The fear-factor aside, however, there are definite medical advantages offered by hypnosis (even when sedated); less bleeding, faster recovery time, and the need for fewer post-operative medications.

What can’t be treated with hypnotherapy?

Serious psychiatric or mental health problems are referred to a qualified psychotherapist or psychiatrist. Medical problems with the physical body must always be treated by a physician first, who can refer hypnotherapy for pain control, hypno-anesthesia or relaxation.
Drug addiction, family dynamics disorders, clinical depression and other such problems need to be treated by doctors and psychiatrists.

Will I bark like a dog or cluck like a chicken?

Stage shows and the media have done harm to clinical hypnosis.  These movies and shows show where a hypnotist made people do mind owning, crazy things. The stage hypnotist knows who to pick and those volunteers know they will be in public eye, so they are comfortable with doing outrageous things in public. 

Hypnosis cannot make you do something that is against your morals or ethics. All hypnosis is self-hypnosis, in truth, and no hypnotist can make you do something that you really don’t want to do. That’s why some people can be hypnotized to stop smoking and yet they still smoke. You have to want the change, agree with the change, and then hypnosis is an instrument for helping make that change better, faster, and permanent.

There is more to change than just a few hypnotic suggestions. In the simplest terms, the person must want the change. Hypnosis can be used to find a healthy, effective replacement, and then it can be used to help flip the subconscious over to the new, healthy habits. In our office, there are many other compensatory strategies that are reinforcing the hypnotic sessions that are done in office. One of the most important factors is that the client feel comfortable and safe. All your questions and concerns will be adequately answered prior to the session starting.

While sitting in a room with 50 other people in a seminar, or listening to a stop-smoking CD can work, it is usually much more effective to have a personalized session with a hypnotherapist, who can customize the approach, language and replacement suggestions to match your lifestyle and circumstances and to ensure that effective follow-up sessions take place if needed.

All my clients learn self-hypnosis

Hypnosis is a powerful life skill. The ethical goal of a hypnotist should be to teach skills so that the client can choose whether to continue on in office or use their skills to be effective by themselves. The stress everyone is bombarded with daily is not healthy. Even the most basic self-hypnosis session is wonderful for restoring a healthful energy to your body and mind.

Once you discover self-hypnosis and practice it, you’ll find that it can help you maintain motivation and peak performance, and remain calmer and more centered in day to day life. You can design your patterns and beliefs to propel you to your highest goals and to your vision of success.

What about my therapist?

Hypnosis is not talk therapy, and does not include advising, diagnosing or prescribing. That would be the domain of other professionals which must be licensed to counsel.  I work with your doctors and therapists to assist in you achieving your goals. The primary aim of hypnosis itself is self-healing, and self-change. The hypnotist’s job is to assist the subject to achieve those natural states of mind where healing and change best happen. Used correctly, hypnosis is especially useful for tapping into that awesome power of the human mind.
